Teaser Tuesday (24): Confessions of a Christmasholic by Joss Wood

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should be Reading. Anyone can participate in Teaser Tuesdays. Just do the following:• Grab your read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• Be careful not to include spoilers!
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

For this week's Teaser Tuesday, I'm sharing teasers from Confessions of A Christmasholic by Joss Wood.

Goodreads synopsis

Sutton Alsop hates Christmas. So much so, when confronted with a house that looks like Santa himself vomited Christmas all over it, she accidentally (drunkenly) destroys every fairy light, fake reindeer and candy cane in sight. Unfortunately for Sutton, this house belongs to none other than Gus Langston, single dad and owner of the village’s year-round Christmas shop – aka Mr. Christmas himself. But Mr. Christmas has a secret only Sutton knows… With the two of them forced together for the holidays, the sparks between them are hot enough to melt even the coldest of hearts!

My teasers

"He'd been so busy he hadn't even had time to go into the storeroom and bang his head against the wall in frustration, something he'd done more than once before."

"All he wanted was to come home to a quiet house, a stiff whiskey and a long bath. But mostly he craved a quiet house free of anything Christmassy."

Confessions of a Christmasholic will be released in two days, on October 19, 2023, and you can add it to your Goodreads shelf here!

For this week's Teaser Tuesday, I'm sharing teasers from All These Sunken Souls: A Black Horror Anthology

Goodreads synopsis

The stories in All These Sunken Souls explore horror through a blend of genres—from the thoughtful to the terrifying—as the reader wanders farther and farther from reality. By delivering a multitude of profound nightmares, this YA horror anthology by established and debut authors contains something for every horror fan—and for anyone who dares to open these pages.

From haunted Victorian mansions, temporal monster-infested asylums, ravaging zombie apocalypses, to southern gothic hoodoo practitioners, the anthology features stories from Kalynn Bayron, Donyae Coles, Ryan Douglass, Sami Ellis, Brent Lambert, Ashia Monet, Circe Moskowitz, Joel Rochester, Liselle Sambury, and Joelle Wellington.

All These Sunken Souls tackles a genre that historically has tokenized and exploited Black characters and opens discussion on how horror translates into the current time we live in.

My teasers

Her hug tightens. "This house isn't good for you."
"What do you mean?" Vienna whispers.
"It rubs you raw. You'll start peeling, and I do not think you'll like the new skin."

I think I was haunted as a child, Vienna thinks. There was a monster when I was a child.

All These Sunken Souls is expected to be released on October 17, 2023, and you can add it to your Goodreads TBR here!

Goodreads synopsis

Middle-class Rosie Macalister has worked for years to fit in with her wealthy friends on the Yale equestrian team. But when she comes back from her junior year abroad with newfound confidence, she finds that the group has been infiltrated by a mysterious Annelise Tattinger.

A talented tarot reader and a brilliant rider, the enigmatic Annelise is unlike anyone Rosie has ever met. But when one of their friends notices money disappearing from her bank account, Annelise's place in the circle is thrown into question. As the girls turn against each other, the group’s unspoken tensions and assumptions lead to devastating consequences.

It's only after graduation, when Rosie begins a job at a Manhattan hedge fund, that she begins to uncover Annelise's true identity––and how her place in their elite Yale set was no accident. Is it too late for Rosie to put right what went wrong, or does everyone's luck run out at some point? Set in the heady days of the early aughts, The Fortune Seller is a haunting examination of class, ambition, and the desires that shape our lives.

My teasers

"I just want things to go back to the way they were.
I wanted it, too. I wanted it for her, and I wanted it for myself."

"The dynamics of the house had changed forever, and the only thing I could think was: we’ve got to get out of here."

For this week's Teaser Tuesday, I'm sharing teasers from The Grimrose Girls by Laura Pohl (The Grimrose Girls #1). I was given an ARC copy for review via Netgalley and I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm currently a little bit more than halfway through.

Goodreads synopsis

The Descendants meets Pretty little liars.

Four troubled friends, One murdered girl... and a dark fate that may leave them all doomed.

After the mysterious death of their best friend, Ella, Yuki, and Rory are the talk of their elite school, Grimrose Académie. The police ruled it a suicide, but the trio are determined to find out what really happened.

When Nani Eszes arrives as their newest roommate, it sets into motion a series of events they couldn't have imagined. As the girls retrace their friend's last steps, they uncover dark secrets about themselves and their destinies, discovering they're all cursed to repeat the brutal and gruesome endings to their stories until they can break the cycle.

This contemporary take on classic fairytales reimagines heroines as friends attending the same school. While investigating the murder of their best friend, they uncover connections to their ancient fairytale curses and attempt to forge their own fate before it's too late.

My teasers

“Death pursues all the girls from the Académie,” Mrs. Vãduva said darkly. “I will not take part in it.”

There was a hanging pause in the air as Mrs. Vãduva looked at the picture. Ella followed her gaze. The one other thing the town talked about other than the witch? The witch’s daughter, the one who’d died.

For my 20th Teaser Tuesday I'm bringing teasers from Friday the Sixteenth by Peter Coombs.

Goodreads synopsis

He stumbled across a web of lies. His conscience wouldn't let him walk away.

Andrew Packford, newly established as an antiques dealer, is enjoying life very much. He has a career that suits his laid back nature, a passion for antiques and business is booming.

Then, as is often the case, fate comes calling. While restoring an item of furniture he finds an old newspaper article together with a photograph of four people. Two men two women. He has no idea just how much these four strangers will change his life.

One of them kills people.

One of them turns a blind eye.

The other two might just be Andrew’s salvation.

The discovery opens a Pandora’s box and while a lesser man might have walked away, that is not his way. If he didn’t stand up for what he thought was right who would? Friday the Sixteenth is a gripping read with a memorable character at its heart.

My teasers

"The ambulance station received the call at twelve minutes past three. They had arrived at the quarry at twenty-one minutes past three and left five minutes later. That left them just six minutes to get to the hospital fifteen miles away.
The journey took thirteen minutes and forty-two seconds."

"One floor above, another life and death struggle was going on."

Add Friday the Sixteenth to your Goodreads TBR, and look out for my review on August 26!

Teaser Tuesday (19): Hematite by Victoria Maderna and Frederico Piatti

For this week's Teaser Tuesday I am bringing you slightly less conventional teasers from Hematite by Victoria Maderna and Frederico Piatti. Instead of sharing teaser sentences, I'm going to be sharing two teaser panels since this is a graphic novel and not a traditional one. I've also already reviewed Hematite, which is another thing that makes it unconventional for me. I usually only post teasers for books that I'm currently reading and have yet to review, so that you guys can get properly excited about the teasers, but the art in Hematite is so beautiful and and I enjoyed the story so much that I just have to share.

Isn't it just beautiful? Doesn't it give you October vibes. I am in love. Read my review of Hematite here

"This isn't normal, Jag. The bodies. The park. The crime scenes. Everyone's just so used to their neighbors being criminals around here. You find out girl scout three doors down beat someone to Hell? Huh. That's interesting, but not surprising. Fucking everyone in this city is thirsty for something that ends in blood."

"Trying to ask someone to understand who you are or what's bothering you or what hurts or why it hurts is a risk I never wanted to take."

Page 90.

At the time of writing this, I'm about halfway through the book. It's set to release on Halloween, so I'm counting it as the first of my mandatory spooky season reads. Once I finish, the review will be up in September :)

"Waiting cracked open even hearts as hard as a walnut shell and only an open heart can be filled."

This week I'm bringing you teasers from The Castle School for Troubled Girls by Alyssa B. Sheimel. I have been loving this book recently. I should have a review up very soon for it, and I wanted to share a few teasers of the writing before that. So my teasers for this week are:

"I’m saying that the people we love never leave us, not entirely. We carry them with us. I don’t like terms like moving on or getting over. I prefer moving forward."

" Pain cannot be avoided, but it can be accepted.”

Page 250.

I have been adoring this book this week, thanks to NetGalley. I can't wait for it's release in 2021 so even more people can love it as much as I do.

This week the teaser is coming to you from Fine by AmyLea Murphy, a book about a girl who wants to find out more about her sister's disappearance, and does so by sifting through her police report.

My teasers:

"I'm humiliated. Not only do I have a big mouth, but now the most normal and well-adjusted person I know has a front-row seat to my dysfunctional family."

"I recognize the pain in his face. It flickers across his eyes for just a moment, but it's unmistakable. It's such an odd kind of ache that it's impossible to miss in another person once you've felt it yourself."

Page 82

Most of this book is Katie sifting through police files, but these teasers take place in Katie's life right now, which, I'm finding, doesn't take up much of the book. I'm almost finished the book, so my review will be up soon!

Teaser Tuesday (10): Unnatural Deeds by Cyn Balog

I just started reading Unnatural Deeds by Cyn Balog late last night. So far, it's reminding me slightly of The Lonely by Ainsile Hogarth. I am currently unsure if that is a good thing. Here are my teasers!

"I swear sometimes I feel less like a human and more like a hamster in one of those wheels."

"This is probably why I checked the clock on the wall twice a minute and rocketed out of my seat the second the minute hand hit the six."

Page 55.

This book shouldn't take me that long to read so look out for the review, that should be posted in October!

This week, I have teasers from the book The Assassin Game by Kristy McKay. The book is about something that started at a prestigious, but relatively harmless game developing into something far more sinister. The book isn't officially published until July 2nd, but I was granted access to it via Netgalley.

       My teasers:

"What if the Killer is out there? What will I see? The sunshine and the background noise of kids screaming in the quad give me the courage, I pull back the curtains."

"Hi!" I wave lamely from above. "Just thought you might be the Killer."

Page 94

I took a break from this book for a while, because I wanted to read Splintered by A.G Howard before it was due back at the library, but now I'm going to have time to read this book again. I'm about halfway finished, so it should be done and reviewed soon!

"I shut my door without answering. My hands shook and my blood felt jittery in my veins."
and...
"I knew deep down I was lying to myself, and the last place I wanted to visit was an asylum."

My teasers (page 14)

"They are in the house, Sasha realized as she sank back against the wall in an effort to become one
with it."

"“There is no way they could have gotten past us. We had the house surrounded,” the first voice
shouted back"

"“I know we’ve had you hit the ground running and not given you much time to breathe, but I promise you are doing exceptionally well"" (page 132)

I chose two pages instead of just the one, because when I randomly opened a page (131) It was an end of chapter page so it only had about 2 sentences on it to begin with. Please do forgive my bending of the rules.

Teaser Tuesday (5): The Lonely by Ainsile Hogarth

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should be Reading.

teasers!

Currently I'm reading The Lonely by Ainsile Hogarth. I borrowed it from somebody I know a few weeks ago, and to say the least, this book is very, very odd.

       My teasers (from page 127):

"When I told Julia about it she was sitting upside down on the couch, her legs over the backrest and her head hanging and bloating with blood"

"I wanted to tear her hair out, fist it with my hands and then with my teeth and not stop till her brains were showing."

These teasers do not correctly encompass the the oddness of this book. But trust me. It's odd.
